J.M. Aurnou, S. Andreadis, L. Zhu and P.L. Olson, 2003, Experiments on convection in Earth's core tangent cylinder, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 212, 119-134. This study was carried out with funds provided by the NSF Geophysics Program. This page contains links to 1 picture and 3 movies from the experimental simulations of tangent cylinder convection in water made by Aurnou et al. (2003). These movies can be downloaded from this site. Please click on each image to access linked file. |

| Figures 1 - 4: Schematic of the Earth's core tangent cylinder region... | Movie 1: Plan view of rotating convection (Expt. #?: Ra_F = ?; Ek = ?) in the hemispherical configuration shown in Picture 1, Figure 3. The rotation direction is out of the page. Florescein dye initially resting atop the heated disk is used to mark the convection. Small scale helical convective plumes form first. As the tangent cylinder fills with these heated plumes a large-scale thermal wind develops. As this flow develops further, the tangent cylinder region becomes baroclinically unstable. However, the rapid rotation restricts a strong mass flux from traveling across the tangent cylinder. (size ~ 3.6MB) | ||||||||||

| Movie 2: Similar to Movie 1. Here the heating is stronger (Expt. #54: Ra = 4e+9; Ek = 1.3e-5) and a greater mass flux pushes out across the tangent cylinder. (size ~ 3.2MB) | Movie 3: Side view movie of small-scale helical plumes within the tangent cylinder (Expt. #11: Ra = 4.4e+9; Ek = 4.3e-5). (size ~ 5MB) | ||||||||||
